Schools round here have always had a long weekend in September, as far back as I can remember anyway, and it's always been called the September Weekend.
There you go Loosehead, you learn something everyday!

I have to admit I'd never heard of the September weekend before one of my sisters moved to Glasgow. I think it's the last Monday in September, officially.
I know that Year 1 children do not start full time school until after that date, which I thought was quite sensible as all the other children will have settled down for the new school year by then and staff can concentrate more fully on integrating the little ones.

That's right, suffragette. My two will have their first full day on Tuesday. It's a good way to break them in gently and get them used to the routines without it being too much all at once. When I told my girls that from next week they would be having their lunches at school and doing more lessons in the afternoon, girl1 asked in great horror ' Do we have to sleep there as well?' I think she thought she was only going to see us at weekends!
I had never heard of it, but it seems some places do shut down. See here
