19A SCYE
29D VASES
3D DETRITION...correct
19d SINGLEt...correct
I haven't done the Saga, but 4d looks awfully like THESEUS.
Scye is a Shakesperean spelling of 'sigh' so as in 'heave a sigh'...plus a scye is an opening for a sleeve in Scottish (Macbeth) dialect.
Vassails is an old word for vessels, so take away 'sails' leaving 'vas'...plus escape minus cape, as in Cape Horn = es. Put the two together = vases.
Saga 7d emanate (name reversed + at + e)
16a avernus.
Aves = birds with an anagram of run inserted
14D SNARK...Sn = tin symbol + ark.

Thank you ALL so much especially Quizmonster for help with explanations not forgetting mahonia.
I thought the VAS part of VASES came from (CAN)VAS = sails, with can being shed
Yours is actually a better approach, Pld, as my suggestion now seems to "double back on itself", as it were. I'm just glad we reached the same end-point! Cheers
