What Was Your First Cat?

Ours was a tabby - full of originality we called him Tiger. He died some 60 years ago. RIP Tiger.
My second and last (so far) cat I acquired in the mid-70s - I'm not a cat-person, but on the way home from the pub one evening this emaciated tiny little kitten emerged from the hedgerow mewing piteously - being all heart I took him home and fed him (sardines, all I had suitable) and adopted him.
I took him to the vet when I calculated he was old enough for his jab (vet confirmed my age estimate) but he obviously took exception to such treatment so shortly after he did a bunk. I called him Gandalf. Here's a pic of him sunbathing in my garden.

I went out the front door about 9pm to put the empty milk bottles out. It was freezing cold, snow still about with a very stiff wind.
This ginger cat was at the bottom of my drive crying and obviously wet and distressed.
Cats are normally very shy but it didn't take this one long to make up its mind that it wanted to come in for food and warmth, it was staving to put it mildly.
It got through a whole tin of tuna in one go, didn't have anything else other than milk.
Asked about for a week or so to try and find who's cat it belonged to, was informed it belonged to someone who had moved house and had just left the cat. A few people told me it had just been walking the streets for some time.
Then I found out it was to become a mother :) it had six kittens, kept one and the others to a cats home when they were ready. 12 months later a knock on the door, have you got our cat? we want it back. oh dear!!
Had some advice from the RSPCA they said, 1. they would have to prove in some way it was their cat, and 2, you would be in your rights to present them with vet bills, food bills and care for the cat while it was in my home. That's what I told them and they didn't bother claiming it. Had the cat for 15 years.

My lovely little Sophie who was owned by some people who didn't look after her properly and spent a lot of time with me. She didn't like coming in at night, but my shed door was always left open with a cat bed in in case she wanted shelter. But she just disappeared one night in 2006 and I never saw her again. I did everything I could to find her, I even remember Mum coming round and we walked down all the backs around here lifting bin lids in case someone had dumped her in one of them. I never gave up hope that she would turn up again one day, but she would be 24 now, so I had to finally accept that she was gone. I still get upset about Sophie.
