With his thick black beard and unsympathetic views on drug addicts, gays, and sex workers, he could easily have slotted into a police role with a Taliban type regime. He was also a fan of corporal punishment.
I sometimes wondered if he lusted to use those sex workers in the manner for which he'd whip them.
Am I being uncharitable?

James not John. Sandy, you'll know that the actor playing Koko in The Mikado and singing "I've Got a Little List" is traditionally allowed to update the list of people who would not be missed if he executed them. When Eric Idle took the role, his list included "bishops who don't believe in God and chief constables who do." That was a dig at Anderton and I think the...

Anderton, not Anderson.^^^
Sandy, have you never heard not to speak ill of the dead.
Very difficult to judge - obit in the Times
Good bits - grammar school kid winning a schol to somewhere
National service in the Mil Police
Joined up
accelerated and promoted everywhere - until CC at 44

A shining future ahead - young thrusting efficient - guilty as charged ( David Brent The Office)
Tel - Wogan - recited a bit of his own poetry - 'Rain'
Tel - Wogan - did say even then he was going to give a moral lead....
.
hmmmm
ABers are OK with schol = scholarship
CC= chief constable
Tel = Terry...... I worry sometimes I am sure needlessly - no?

The less good bits
Moral crusade, arresting prostitutes of all kinds
The Times mentions confiscating a page-3 calendar - I heard a knickers and underpants booket - pre internet. ( convicted and fined)
Going soft on drugs as all the Chinese would kill each other and there would then be no drug problem ( excuse me)

Doing the same for the sikh ( areas ) and muslims

Chinese kids ( educated ) looking white - protesting loudly and credibly ( no street afro or shi-shi Indian voices) that their parents paid taxes and so had a right to police/ protection as anyone else

thinking he was Oliver Cromwell ( what?????) - like Oliver Cromwell then

and then .... John Stalker
i remember him featuring on a billboard for Eddie Shah's "Today" newspaper in about 1987 with the tagline - "Halo, Halo, Halo - have our police got ideas above their station?"
John Stalker was his deputy and was the wrong man at the wrong time. just like Macmillan, the massacres of the Cossacks 1945 and the Betrayal of yalta 1944) (*)
John Stalker was sent to sort out a rash of shoot-to-kill events in Northern Ireland. No one expected stalker to extensively re-investigate all the cases. Not even the parents of the dead shooters
John S discovered that "intelligence" had recorded one shooting and denied it all. He was just about to get the tape of the dead man being shot who was a retard when he (JS) was suspended.

A charade then followed when JS was asked to account for various friendships. Over a few years

The obvious mess did nothing for the reputation of NI police , "intelligence" Anderton nor the corruption spooks of Manchester police.

Fahy - CC who forgot to register 80 000 crimes, is considered to have done better
.
(*) Not Malta, Togo ! Mac was a doer ( AB is OK with 'doer', a man who does things and carries out orders ) Here Mac sent back the cossacks to their deaths in gulags under stalin 1945. He was MEANT to sit behind a desk, push a pen and say blah-de-blah. He didnt because he was a do-er. Thousands of dead cossacks as a result. BUT the POWs in the east, were returned to Britain.
I bet all the readers wanna know what the tapes of the shooting of the young handicapped man revealed. they lost see.
And Stalker talked to the few ( around six) men who had heard the tapes before they lost ( laughing policeman)
and did they or did they not.... shout a warning ?
AND
three said yes and three said no
tapes see above not available

and people who do this sort of stuff will know that in a contended disputed event, people have very different memories....
