what do you call it? Looked up my local 'tip' and couldn't find anything listed under that - apparently they are recycling centres now.

Try looking under the name of your local council. I seem to think they are listed there.
The one in my area is now called the Reuse and Recycling Centre.
I would call it the tip or dump but it is a recycling centre
I call it a dump but it is a recycling centre
Refuse disposal site
It’s the tip to us, but it’s good to see the level of recycling that goes on there now.
I still call it the tip, but the ones I use are all very modern now with separate sections for your different types of rubbish.
There are always men walking around who will help if you're not sure which section to use, and I also find them very helpful towards me as they usually offer to help me unload the boot.
At our recycling center ( York) wast that cannot be recycled is has it's own skip now called ( Energy conversion waste? ) or in other words it's going to the incinerator. The world's gone mad!
The signposts around here direct people to the 'HWRC', which is fine if you know what those letters stand for but probably not a lot of use otherwise! ("Household waste recycling centre").

what's mad about that, dustypuss? It's exactly what I've got at home: a bin for stuff that can be recycled and a bin for stuff that can't be. Makes sense to me.
>>> waste that cannot be recycled is has it's own skip now called ( Energy conversion waste? ) or in other words it's going to the incinerator. The world's gone mad!

Why is sending waste to produce electricity at Allerton Waste Recovery Park 'mad', Dustypuss? The City of York Council is as enlightened as Suffolk County Council is when it comes to dealing with household waste, ensuring that none of it goes to landfill and that which can't be recycled is used to generate electricity.

The coup, pronounced cowp.
My parents used to take me to the tip. Everything we dumped was pushed away by a bulldozer. Boy did it stink!

Thank heavens those days have gone

Now we have a well organised household recycling centre. A pleasure to visit.
We have to book a space to go to our dump now which is much better - lots of room to park and it's not a bun fight anymore.
It's only the wording that I think is mad. It used to be a skip called ( rubbish that can't be recycled)
It makes it clear the stuff (or the majority of it anyway) will be burnt rather than put into landfill.
^ Rubbish^
