Barry is now 88 and still performing with a UK tour this year & continuing to work hard for the dissemination of Australian culture. This is vintage stuff ( not for the 'woke')

He's meant to, Redhelen. He's a caricature of an anti-woke Gammon type who's proud of saying disgusting things. Sense of humour required to enjoy his behaviour. Those who find him funny may love the portrayal of such an awful creature, or may love his portrayal of what they'd love to be if they had the nerve and the gift for his shafts of wit.

Always found this character far funnier than Dame Edna ever was.
Two thumbs up from me. :-)

Fatti //Always found this character far funnier than Dame Edna ever was.//

Dame Edna he admits was based on his mother with whom he had a somewhat strained relationship.
Sir Les makes me feel a bit sick - but I love Dame Edna. :o)
I wonder if he's any relation to the bush poet, Banjo Paterson, who famously wrote, Mulga Bill's bicycle, among other masterpieces?
Gives me the heebiejeebies

Sense of humour required, atheist? Does that mean anyone who doesn’t appreciate him has no sense of humour?
I always thought it was great the way Dame Edna could pretend to be a bloke ;-)
I have to say I have laughed at what Sir Les says - it’s his physical appearance and demeanour that makes me feel sick. Scruffy, fat, dirty and sweaty looking and spitting all over the place. Yuk!
Naomi; you forgot to mention the drooling and the scratching and adjustment of his private parts.
"Shafts of wit", now there's a Spoonerism. :-)
Obviously not one of mine, Douglas. I got it from Ken Dodd.

Atheist, you get the BA, but it's surprising that it had to be said.

The final, "Haven't you got anything smaller?" routine was hilariously outrageous & I think I fell asleep last night still laughing :0)
Does that mean anyone who doesn’t appreciate him has no sense of humour?
yes esp on AB - dearth noted

I went and saw his show 1976 - funniest sauna in town
summer was v hot

fielded q from the audience - "Is the reason you never took up politics, dame Edna, that it might vulgarise you ?"
