Been told I need a wheel alignment. Just done a little google here and there, am I right in thinking that it is the track rod ends ( i think they call them) that they move to a different position.???

Tyre wear on outside edge. I think he called it positive camber. He his telling me the truth because he only does MOTs not repairs, have used him for a very long time.

It sounds to me as if the "toe-in" is incorrect. "Toe-in and toe-out adjustments are made by screwing the track-rod ball-joint ends up or down the track rods to alter their length". See here (about half way down the page):
