I know this may sound patronising but, are you sure that your firewall is letting it through?

that wasn't patronising at all. i'm not sure - i tried to disable all my firewall and anti-virus which didn't work. it worked fine until i downloaded the new version of messenger, i'm sure that's the source of the problem.......
OK - Try Add/Remove Programs and remove it, then re-install it, this should work. Good Luck
I had that problem a couple of months ago. Tried all kinds of things to get it working and fixes from doing a google search and still no luck. Also uninstaled and reinstalled and still no luck. The only thing i could find that was strange was that i was using norton internet security at the time and i unistalled that at one poit trying to sort out msn. Instead of reinstalling it i installed avg antivirus and when i ran a full check on that it came up with 19 virus's that norton hadn't. I'm guessing it was one of those that stopped it working but stil never fixed it and i ended up reinstalling windows. With that info you might be able to work it out :)

thanks lisa - i do have norton but the license has run out so it may be a new virus. did you buy avg antivirus? if so, where from? i really cant afford to reinstall windows!! thanks for the help!
Why don't you just download and run AVG Free Version? It has updates available almost everyday!! www.grisoft.com
