Peggy - out of order?

Did anyone watched Eastenders last night and thought Peggy was way out of order?! I thought she was disgusting calling Billy & Honey's new baby a 'retard'!

Didn't see it (can't stand eastenders) but isn't a soap supposed to reflect real life? In the real world people say things like that.

In real life she probably wouldn't use that word but it was in her script.

it is in her character to behave like that, remember how she reacted to marks aids story. i heard that she gets better though once she holds the baby. i also heard that barbara windsor hates playing peggy that way so its definately all the script and not the actor.

I didn't take offence, I think they are writing this from an older persons point of view. Back in the day, Downs was considered to be an embaressment etc and was very misunderstood. I think they will write her to come around but when you're older it's harder to change your views!

I think they have done the right thing. Peggy is an old school style character who would struggle to understadn Downs straight away - she would have grown up in a world where Downs was considered an embaressment. Thankfully, Eastenders are covering all reactions... Well Done EE!
