i'm making little buns to take into school and i want to ice them. whats the best kind of icing? i usually use butter & icing sugar, but this icing isnt very strong. so if i carry the buns into school, with one layer of buns on top of the others, it will crush the icing and make it..mushy. sorry if this makes no sense! does anyone know an icing that when it sets, it quite hard? thank you!
well, there's fondant - which you can buy ready made and roll out/cut out shapes, perhaps or royal icing (the sort you get on wedding cakes etc). Find a recipe in the link...
Butter and icing sugar is the basis of a buttercream filling for a sandwich cake (or to put in the 'hole' if you give your fairy cakes wings.
Glace icing is better for the topping - basically just icing sugar and water - and you can colour it with cocoa or chocolate powder, coffee, or any of the food colourings available in the supermarkets.
