I have problems with memory even though I don't have many applications open. I have 256MB of RAM but can't have my mail client and browser open at the same time. Has anyone got any suggestions as to what could be eating memory and what I could do about it (I've tried deleting unwanted applications, defragging and I've run Norton Utilities)?
Have you checked the 'Virtual Memory'. That could affect the running of your computer depending on what it is set at (normally the computer is set to automatically set this 'Virtual Memory', but not always).
Sounds like a memory leak to me, where memory is allocated for use then not released, eventaully it uses it all up.
You could try installing a newer version or different "make" of both your e-mail client or brower.
Did this happen all of a sudden ....have you installed extra ram recently, could you have inadvertently picked up a worm on your computer or perhaps the ram chip has collapsed? Last one happened to my friend's computer.
Thanks for the responses. Virtual memory is set to automatic and I haven't installed any new ram lately. The error message I get is Insufficient memory. Please close down one or more programs.
I'm using the most up-to-date email client and browser so I would be surprised if it were that. It could be a worm, although I have anti-virus software installed.
Pardon me for stating the obvious, I presume youve tried ctrl-alt-del to see what is running in the background. Does the right amount of RAM show in system properties/general.
I'm with wildwood on this. Also, if you are running Windows 2000 or XP try viewing Commit Charge (K) under Performance in the Task Manager. If it exceeds the total Physical Memory (261912 K I guess) then you are reliant on Virtual Memory too much
