Radiotherapy Cost Privately
4 Answers
Hi, as a few of you know I've been going through treatment for breast cancer and have had successful lumpectomy on NHS in June. I'm now waiting on Radiotherapy and there is some wait. Could anyone guide me on approx costs for private treatment if they have gone down this route themselves?
I don't have Bupa medical insurance but understand some hospitals you can just pay as you go if needed for certain procedures or treatment.
I only need 5 fractions plus initial planning session. Which I'm assuming would be considerable less than the standard 15 fractions over 3 weeks.
I have put a couple of enquiries in but just an indicative coat would be useful.

However as you are on the list for treatment and have a Consultant in the Radiotherapy Hospital in which your treatment scheduled, just ring up his secretary for details of cost. My guess would be £30,000 for the 5 sessions.....just a guess.
If you can afford it without your lifestyle changing, then go private, but if you can't afford it, then your problem is solved.
The cost will vary from hospital to hospital.

PP The Christie is great for Clinical Trials and during my time in Oncology we referred many patients to them but how do we know the OP lives within a reasonable distance of Manchester?
Radiotherapy will be delivered daily and if the OP lives in, say, Cornwall, that would be a fair trek on a daily basis.
I also don't think 5 fractions of radiotherapy will be anywhere near as costly as Sqad's estimate.

Seems odd that your consultant who performed the lumpectomy didn’t set the wheels in motion for radiotherapy, I’d have thought it would be imminent?
I’d give his Secretary a ring on Tuesday and ask what’s happening, just in case for some inexplicable reason you’ve fallen through the net.
Have you bern informed of the pathology result from your lump yet?
