I hope those who are too young to have known the Gorbachevs at the time of the ending of the Cold War will read about them and have some idea of their achievements.

I think it is a relevant time to remember that not every Russian is our enemy.

He was a great guy, & they say, 'behind every great man is a great woman', nothing could be truer in this case, 'Gorby' had Raisa, (d. 1999.) It's the end of a chapter, RIP both. :0(

Berlin wall: Eastern germany economy imploded. There was political instability to boot - the meetings of Leipzig - running into the riots/ protests of Leipzig over the next ( last ) president (Henze) as they ran thro the streets shouting 'who asked us?'

Further to other contributions, almost all of them positive, he showed real guts during the August coup (effectively imprisoned) and, when the game was up for the Party, and Yeltsin took over, he was remarkable in his lack of bitterness. I think he was a remarkable man who, during his lifetime, was under appreciated. So, yes, as others have said, I very much hope that he rests in peace and is reunited with his beloved wife Raisa.

I remember when I was about 16 and coming back from a holiday with my friends our plane was held up on the tarmac at Bristol airport because his plane was waiting for him to get on and leave.
