Hi. I am a retired Director of a Language College. I am also a Senior Examiner for Spanish Writing. I would be interested in filling in my time and giving myself a challenge by taking on some home based translation work. I am practically bilingual in French and Spanish. I have excellent IT skills. I cannot do oral translation because radiotherapy has largely taken away my voice. (Which I still could.)
I live in Greater Manchester.
Not in my experience to tell you how to develop a business but I'd suggest maybe making a name for yourself by joining an established translation company first, making some useful contacts, before setting out on your own ?
I would agree with OG, get yourself on the books of a firm offering translation services – with your experience they should welcome you with open arms.
On the down side, my understanding is that nowadays language translation is performed by software, with humans tidying up the machine’s output into something comprehensible – minimising the need for expert translators.
You might like to approach a major publisher to see what market there might be for translations of some of their recent publications. Biggest UK academic press is OUP
