So much for the pledge to tackle this!? Let’s hope Cruella can have at least a scintilla of effectiveness over her predecessor, shouldn’t be too difficult?

//What do you suggest is done (properly planned, legally sound and properly implemented) under the current overarching legislative framework, fatticus?//
Exactly as I’ve said previously.
The French are not holding up their end of the bargain, that’s patently and painfully obvious.
As we’ve supposedly ‘taken back control’ I’ve suggested we stop paying them and return the illegal migrants to the French beaches via landing craft(one poster suggested machine-gunning them, which I considered a tad draconian).
I’m sure then that it might encourage the French to patrol their beaches and seas far more rigidly than they currently do.
But that’s my suggestion, one would have hoped that after 12 years those elected might have rectified the problem by now, they certainly promised to.

Has anyone tried to tackle this problem at its source?
1. Go to the camps, or wherever the immigrants start their journey.
2. Question them about why they want to go to the UK.
3. Who organises their journey?
4. How much do the fixers charge?
5. Where do these 'poor' people get the money from?
6. Who decides which family members should undertake the journey?
7. What happens to the family members who are left behind?
8. Who will guide the immigrants on their journey through Europe?
It would be interesting to know the background to these journeys.

//NJ,
Put your glasses on. The number by boat in 2018 was 299, as shown on the graph in your link.//
Yup, apologies. Colours not particularly distinct. I think the main reason for the difference is the shift away from lorries.

Yes. Any politicians worth their salt would develop a plan along those lines. The trouble is.....

Well, one might expect or at least hope that a combination of government and the finest legal minds from a bench(I believe that is the correct noun?) of Judges might have concocted or at least cobbled together a plan by now, no?
