they're both hanging, TTT - "hang" bears its usual meaning. Even before the introduction of drops, the formulation I think was hanged by the neck until dead. If you had good friends, they'd pull your legs to hasten the process. (The old one of hung drawn and quartered meant only being half-hung before being hauled off to meet your death elsewhere.) Drops are comparatively new.

Hanging as perfected by the Britch hangmen was designed to be as quick and painless as possible and it was and still is the best way to execute someone. The drop was precisely calculated using weight tables devised by William Marwood 1872.

TTT is quite correct. And that is why a special knot is needed to snap the spine at the neck in a single jerk as the rope tautens.

If it's to be done it's best done quickly.
Firing squads seem the obvious choice. Some American states, being what they are, might offer places in the firing party to the highest bidder. I'm sure there'd be no shortage of volunteers.
