what sound does a pelican make?

The only sound ever heard from a pelican is the hissing, snakelike noise that the young make when intruders come near their nest.Otherwise they have no vocal power.

You are certainly curious about pelicans aren't you? Two postings on the same subject...

Actually adult pelicans seldom make any sound, but when they do it is a low grunt. Not a quack. Baby pelicans, on the other hand, squeal like a stuck pig.

I know this because I am am the pelican keeper at Birdworld in Farnborough. I can also tell you that when the adults feed their young they regurgitate a bit of food into their beaks and the children all stick their heads in and gobble it up. The greedy little tykes. Basically eating sick out of someone's mouth - but that's nature for you.

FACT.......Pelican chicks can tell their mum if they are too hot or cold from inside the eggs...........not sure what they say though...........probably Brrrrr or Whew!

Just heard the pelican on the link, sounds more like a dog? very uncanny. Oh well you learn something every day.

As far as I can recall, the brown pelicans along the coast of California make a kind of rattle or clicking noise but I think this is done with the beak clapping together, rather than a vocal sound.
