I imagine many will be wrinkled old retainers who know no other life apart from service in the royal household.

I doubt there are any ‘jobs for life’ in this day and age.

I’m sure, with the experience of working for the Queen, they’ll be gainfully employed quite quickly.

laid off- - the ones who were employed, "for the life of...."
