i dont understand do you mean we export it because you cant buy it here like we export arms because we dont sell arms kind of thing but it doesnt explain why we grow the stuff when we could use the land for something like food for us on our land

In theory it can be prescribed for medicinal use here but it seldom is.

As to your original question, I expect Americans do sell enough at home without having to export. Recreational use is legal in many states there, unlike here, so there's a market. You see signs in buildings saying "No Smoking and that includes cannabis".
