why do people say bone dry when i think of a bone i think of it being a bit wet

The bones of a dead person are dry, living people have wet bones.

does it not depend how the dead bones are stored what a silly saying when something could be wet or dry maybe that is why they say it is bone dry maybe that is where it all came from because they didnt know how dry it was so they say bone dry then when its not dry they say well i meant a wet bone
