Knee Replacement

My mum (who is 76) has got to have a knee replacement. Any advice or van anyone tell me what she will be like after.

I have insisted that she comes to stay with me for a week after so I can look after her. She lives alone so I just need someone who has experienced this to help.

My mum had one in May. She is only 52 so quite young to have it done.

The hospital will not let her out until see goes through a list of tasks to re-use the knee.

She will have to have lots of physio and they even make people walk up a pretend staircase to see how they will handle stairs in the home.

Mum was really well after the operation and some of the older ladies on the ward were soon up and about on the sticks, She has to be really careful not to over do it and watch that infection does not get into the wound.

It sounds like a good idea to me that you want her to stay with you after the op, because even though she will be made by the hospital to be mobile the pain kicks in big time about a week after and she will need someone there just in case.

Hi Sally, I am going into hospital sometime in the next few months to have both knees replaces with three months between operations. Like spurslady's mum I am also in my 50s. I think it is very important that you can have her come home to yours after her surgery but I hope that you live close enough for her to be able to attend her physio. That is really important. It will give you all the info on this operation and how patients cope with it, what precautions need to be taken etc. I wish your mum every success with her op and a good recovery. It is great you are prepared to look after her.
