The Fixed-term Parliaments Act was repealed on 24.3.22 and the new PM could call a general election to-morrow if he wanted to.

Thanks the corbeyloon...I was repeating what some reporter/pundit said today but its out of date it seems.... but while the PM could call one its unlikely at the moment as its a sure defeat for the Cons. The opposition could force one but would need a majority vote (not the two third's I though it were) but is that likely to happen with a large Con majority.... cant see it

They know there won't be an election tomorrow, however calling for one is partly the long game - getting the message to as many ears as possible - and partly a public show of strength.
