If you are going to make that train trip, don’t forget to have some form of ID (e.g. passport) when buying the ticket at the train station.

Not wanting to carry my passport around (for security reasons), the staff accepted a good colour copy of my passport photo page; but quite why you have to prove your ID when buying a train ticket in Vietnam was a mystery to me (it might only apply to foreign looking travellers).

It's a bit like Thailand then Hymie, the first thing I do is take a photo copy of my passport and put it in the back of my wallet. Thanks again.

Another piece of advice I can give re Vietnam rail transport is that they don’t sell return tickets (not to me, anyway).

I suspect the reason for this is that unlike other countries they want to control the maximum number of persons on a train, which would be near impossible allowing passengers to catch any train they choose.
But to guarantee yourself a seat on the train you can book your ticket well in advance at the departure station.
