Hey guys, I found my grandmother's birth notice and felt a big chuffness (on www.1837online.com) I'm sure I'll find more stuff on other members of the family, but i managed to get my greatgrandmother's maiden name, which is the first piece of information i've got that isnt straight from a family members mouth. I'm very pleased.

The problem I have is that my Grandfather was born in Scotland, and 1837online deals with England and Wales only, anyone know of any Scottish sites?

Immi civil registration did not start in Scotland until later, 1st January 1855 and though that is the case, the actual quality of information in the registrations is far more valuable that in the English returns. For instance, on the Scottish Birth Certificate it gives the place and date of the parents marriage and ths mothers maiden name on the Marriage cerificates it gives the names of both parents including the maiden name of the mother, many Scottsh marriages actually took place in the home of ther Bride or groom or a family member and this will be stated and the address given..
