The arrival of Musk seems to have taken the handbrake (indeed all brakes) off the conspiracy nutters, anti-vaxers and general fruitcakes.
Twitter always required a high degree of scepticism - the place is now to be avoided except for following known accounts (either for humour or news events).
I can never understand people who say Twitter is rubbish, or that they don't want to go there. If something pops up on your feed / timeline then simply block it!
Mine has stuff about astronomy, photography, local events, beer, and other stuff I'm interested in because I've tailored it that way.
Twitter can indeed be fun - I follow several people who give me a lot of enjoyment with their assorted views on life, the universe and whiskey.
It can be useful too - many organisations have their best customer service people on their twitter feeds - I've solved a few irritating problems very quickly there after futile struggling with phone and/or chat sessions - it's now my first resort for attempting to get decent service from any recalcitrant companies.
The general level of hate is rising though - harmless tweets can attract vile nutters with an axe to grind over perceived/invented wrongs - for example, Victoria Coren-Mitchell got a barrage of abuse recently when just mildly defending the appearance of a team member on Only Connect.
Reading your Vanity Fair article confirms that Musk (far from tightening up moderation of the nutjobs) has started by sacking most of the head moderators ...
"the world’s wealthiest man, a self-declared “free speech absolutist” who has promised to soften many of Twitter’s content-moderation policies"
"'The arrival of Musk seems to have taken the handbrake (indeed all brakes) off the conspiracy nutters, anti-vaxers and general fruitcakes.' " - Musk is no dummy he'll know if he heads the wrong way he'll lose the advertisers.
Twitter has always been a political cesspit - full of vile leftie comments and pile-ons on anyone who doesn't agree with their views. What sort of platform bans the likes of Tommy Robinson and Katie Hopkins, yet allows the likes of Anjem Choudary to spew his hate messsages?
It's got the same moderation it had before Musk owned it, clown.
Of course, a load of lefty illiterati have been *** posting to 'get it shut down'. Silly ***
