Growing up, my mother used to make a dish in the slow cooker which she called chicken and rice braise.

I cannot find a recipe for it online and wondered if any of the older Abers had an idea of what this dish was and if I could swap the rice for pearl bearly?

Was it risotto / paella style, maybe more of a casserole?

yes - it always looked like she cooked everything bunged in together in the slow cooker - but when I try it comes out claggy
I meant was it a wet or drier dish? Pearl barley needs a lot of liquid but chicken and barley would be great in a slow cooker stew, I make it a lot in the winter.

With chicken and rice I’d fancy tagine style with apricots

I see what you mean.
Well unfortunately I cannot eat rice which is why I thought of pearl barley.
Mother cooked a whole chicken in the pot with rice and it always came out 'damp' and fluffy!
I've had great success with paella in the slow cooker but of course it depends on the type of rice.
I wouldn't substitute barley if I wanted something similar to fluffy rice, it's not going to happen.
Why not try couscous, cook seperately then combine

thanks for your help.
Barley is high in protein so thats why its better than couscous.
I have it on the go and see what happens, I put the barley in a pan and saute before putting it in SC with thyme, stock and salt and pepper and of course chicken bits and will see what it comes out like
Interested to know how it turns out
There are a lot of chicken and barley slow cooker recipes online.

Being 'older generation' I was hoping one of the older member may know what I was on about.
As it was about recipe and food I put it in Food and not Chatterbank

I'm so old that the only rice I ever saw when I was a boy was rice pudding. Rice, for dinner? Unheard of!

Oh my that old Barry?
My Dia was in the navy so mum grew up eating lots of different foods and passed that onto us - plus we lived in Hong Kong when I was a child
I made something similar last week. Might I suggest that you have too much rice in it. Try again with less rice or more stock.
