Watched the programme on sky Arts yesterday .

How sad I felt for Karen , with her personal life , trying to cope with her eating disorder

Such a brilliant singer .
Unique powerful voice , yet effortless calm and smooth

There was a tribute singer on .
She was good , but in my opinion could not capture the unique powerful , yet effortless and calm voice of Karen

No one saw it then ?

Anyone aware of her story ?
I;m very aware of her story - it has been documented many times
I think Karen Carpenter has possibly the finest female voice captured on record.

It's all the more poignant given her deeply unhappy love life and her dysfunctional family.

Some artists manage to convey an impression, an essence of their emotional depth in the way they sing, feelings that can never be expressed verbally, because our spoken language is nowhere near finding definitive adjectives for the core of the human condition.

Karen Carpenter didn't put an impression of her soul into her vocals, she put it all in, every last bit.

I feel that every time I hear her sing.
Opted not to see it as I've seen programmes on her life before. She could hit the drums well, as well.
I've never really been a joiner.
yes and don't forget the beautiful Lena Zavaroni wonderful voice and tragic death, eating disorder and depression
Karen Carpenter had a beautiful voice and I honestly believe if she had suffered her mental health issues in the 21st century she would have had so much more help and possibly would not have died.
I don't have sky unfortunately. I am a great fan of The Carpenters and found Karen's singing out of this world. Her untimely death was a great loss.

Her self-esteem was non-existent - a result of her mother's worship of Richard to her exclusion from what I could gather - an old-fashioned and Patriarchal slant - the very dated "a woman's place in in the home" attitude which of course is still prevalent in some States it would seem. If only she could have drawn strength from the obvious adoration of millions of fans, but it was not to be.
Canary, you don't need to have Sky to be able to watch Sky Arts. I can get it on Freeview.
