how do you keep people off the road, short of locking them up permanently?

I would have thought that a third-time offender merited more than nne years behind bars; but presumably sentencing regulations don't allow him to be locked up forever.

Most people would feel so guilty about causing one death that they might give up drinking, driving or both.

The fact that he did it a second time means that he is a lost cause.

I watch quite a lot of factual police programmes and the number of times disqualified drivers, drunk drivers or unlicensed drivers are caught behind the wheel (quite often multiple times) is staggering. To kill someone and then drive while under the influence and disqualified shows a total disregard for life and the law.

They didn't "let him back on the road" did they - he was disqualified from driving.

In such circumstances I think manslaughter would be a more appropriate charge.

If the law doesnt allow it then it needs changing. It is tantamount to murder so life in jail is required.

I would have thought manslaughter rather than murder, ymb, you have to intend to kill someone for it to be murder.

I'd be happy if it was manslaughter but I'm not sure the great British driving public would be. They just don't see cars as weapons or traffic deaths as equivalent to other killings even if the driver's as drunk as a skunk.
