Ive tried that, plus other things. Ive been out and cut large stems of brambles to spread around but to no effect. It really is annoying when I see what they've done.
10C - You need to scare the heeby jeebies out of them. Water and loud noise will spook them - get a motion-sensitive system attached to a sprinkler or noise-making machine.

Alternatively, make the ground hard for their cute little paws to walk on, but it looks as if you have already considered that.

I've heard about lion droppings but it's really expensive. I believe it deters most animals. Might try the sound machine.

This past few days I have noticed a black and white cat repeatedly circling our block. Do they have some sort of "patrolling" instinct or is it looking for a way in to cause mischief?

davebro - cats are territorial, more so the males, and will patrol their patch and attack invaders.
Sometimes two cats share an area of land but they visit it at different times of the day - how they manage to negotiate this time-share arrangement baffles me.
10 C st When I was having problems with wild boar invading my grassland around the house, the local hunt recommended lion droppings. They said it was about the only thing they knew that would work. (This was in France of course.) Otherwise, sudden jets of water do work very well, but are harder to administer.
