hi vortex,
i can say they most certainly do work.
although they are not a replacement for good home insulation.
If your asking how they function, it's a fairly simple device. The fan draws in room air and passes it over a cooling coil or plate which condenses the moisture in the air. The moisture drips into the holding tank, which you empty periodically. Most have a shutoff float in the tank to keep it from overflowing onto your floor.
if you look at your fridge, you will see its damp at the cold bit at the back, covered in condensation, dehumidifiers work the same way
Dehumidifiers help remove excess moisture from the air. This is especially helpful if you live in a humid climate or if your home has recently had a leak or flooding. Excessively moist air can cause mold and dust mites to thrive in your home, causing allergic reactions and triggering severe asthma symptoms.
