Can somebody explain why “see lower crossing place” is Oxford please?
I get the ox and ford bits of the clue but not the answer.

lower = the noise an ox makes plus ford = crossing place
cows and oxon "low" ie, moo. A ford is a crossing place.

Oxford is a place where cows cross.
Oxford is an episcopal 'see'.
