Say someone had a sporty car and it got stolen through key cloning, whilst parked on the persons drive.

If the persons family and neighbours said that they were partly to blame for not putting their steering lock on that night is this victim blaming? I is it unfair to allocate blame?

Does it matter what anyone says... its what the insurance company thinks what matters....but the main blame must lie with the thief

Redhelen I agree in a way as my friend did steal something once from a bloke and I thought what a docile git for leaving it around/not protecting it.

Given the amount of theft I am going to change my attitude, nice girls finish last, I suppose it is every person for themself these days

Gness that was just in reply to redhelen, I didn’t originally believe in victim blaming but am keeping an open mind whilst reading peoples views.

I suppose I am dumb for not putting a steering lock on my car but if this is the case other victims must be dumb too

Where I live, my house has been broken into twice (once during lockdown while I was working for the hospital) and my car stolen. I was blamed to some extent for all these instances by family

It doesn't sound like the neighbors were just giving helpful advice. We call neighbors like that "pot stirers". They give the victims an extra jab in order to feel superior.

You say the car was stolen by key cloning but that can mean two things. The proper definition is that thieves have cloned the code from the remote key fob whilst the door was being opened by the owner then copied the code on to a blank key.
The owner can do nothing to prevent that happening.

The term is also wrongly used to refer to signal cloning to steal keyless cars which the owner can easily prevent by keeping all keys in Faraday pouches, a tin or the microwave oven. Not to do so is irresponsible, you might as well leave the car unlocked with the engine running.

Using a steering lock or similar is essential for keyless cars not parked in a secure garage, and a good idea for every type of car. I use one on my old banger. Laziness not to if you have one.

I blame car thieves for forcing people to take these security measures.

It will have been signal cloning I was wrong in my original post. They were on camera walking round the back of my house.

The key was kept in a faraday pouch, obviously they don’t work you can get box versions which are supposed to be better. Or some people recommend keeping keys in a microwave. I should have had a steering lock on though.

The above being said, as I have had 2 break ins already in the space of 2 years it really wouldn’t surprise me if had they not been able to access the key they would have broke in the house to demand them which wouldn’t have been great as I live alone.

One decision I do make in life is not wearing high heels. Not only are they impractical and uncomfortable but I want to be able to run, fight and defend to my best ability when out if need be, not be limited by footwear and flimsy clothing.

I don’t know how they copied the key then, but they walked round the back of the house. They could have still cloned the key when I was getting in/out of the car

I was informed by a few people that the boxes work much better than pouches

There was only 1 key in my house the spare was at my parents
