We have a bowl of hyacinths. They do not perfume the room, but if yoy get close to them they have an aroma which we think reminds us of a vegetable but we just cannot identify it.

Any ideas, please?
(I do know that hyacinths and their aroma are poisonous to cats, they are in a room my babies are excluded from).

I hate the smell. Don't handle the bulbs unless you have gloves on. They bring you out in a rash. Very pretty though. I wouldn't let your babies near them.
Sorry I realise now you know about cats and hyacinths. I should read properly!
Asparagus?

/The hyacinth is a flowering plant in the family of Asparagaceae, meaning it's related to the fancy vegetable that makes your pee smell funny - rest assured, hyacinth flowers are fragrant, but not in that way./

Lol, dont worry MissT, anything potentially poisonous to them I dont generally have or is kept away from them. I dont use air fresheners or diffusers, or essential oils. My weakness is lilies but they are kept in a room from which they are excluded.

When ASBO was killed my lovely neighbour brought me a gorgeous bouquet of flowers which were still going when the kittens landed. I ditched the flowers and scrubbed that room to be clear of lily pollen to keep the babies safe.

Poor Mr BM is getting sick of hearing "no thats not safe for the kittens".

They ARE only babies tho!! (And im a neurotic, silly mum).

We thought asparagus, but they dont smell like that. It's quite perplexing.
I have day lollies in the garden that were there 43 years ago when we moved in. So far 13 cats haven't perished. But like you I am very careful with kittens.
I obviously have lolly trees in the garden ! Whoops.
Are you sure that it's a vegetable and not a spice that the smell brings to mind? Google finds several references to hyacinths smelling like cinnamon.
Almonds?
I hate the smell it always smells like rotten apples to me.
