A letter MAY have to be removed from the clue before solving.
1. Heartless American policeman lying about account of events (6) REPORT? why?
30. Prisoner requires this amount to be added to stop (5)
The wordplay MAY give an extra letter.
1d. Reference part of speech that has a resounding effect (6)
5. English University dons shed light on place (4) Lieu? why?
27. Powerful piece from Cots (5) Queen from size of bed and Chess?
I'm just being cautious here, in case I didn't lay out my answers very well. In 1 Across, that O isn't 'removed from the clue', it's involved in wordplay. 30 A does, as said, have a letter removed before solving.
Thanks, I had'nt seen it.... was just puzzled by the 'size of bed' explanation. These seeme babit beyond me but how does Cats work- is it a queen cat or from the musical (only songs I know are Memerys or Mr Mstophelees
Thanks, Hankir. For 2 D, there's a five-letter 'added' and then a two-letter word meaning... a thing, quality, something not specified, 'je ne sais quoi'. That leads to 'essence' in French, of Paris.
