I just don't get meditation!

I have tried meditation a couple of times on my own in my room. I've read up about it, and you're meant to relax yourself, legs crossed etc, and concentrate on your breathing, counting breaths you take and trying to keep your concentration on that. I've heard that your mind should wonder but when you feel your mind wonder, you should bring your concentration back to the breathing.

When I try it, all the time all I can think of is "this isn't working, this isn't doing anything, I can't do this!". I want to be able to meditate and use it to better myself. Will I get used to it?

Any advice?

dont no, not if you are distracting your concentration with negative defeatist comments.

sitting meditation focus is on the breath entirely as it moves in and out, and the abdomen as it moves up and down. if other thoughts distract, then put them aside. with practice, you shoold be distracted less and notice more about the object of observation, the breath. if othyer thougyts are taking over then you are not meditiating.
Hi YT It can take some time to get into the practice of meditation. Two things to remember - begin with a very short period of time 5-10 minutes and gradually increase and - practice regularly - daily if possible. Forget torturing your body be trying to sit in Lotus position or even crossed legged for that matter. Concentrate on you breathing and be aware of the sounds and distractions - acknowledge and let go. There are many forms of meditation from walking - to a laughing meditation. You could also consider joining a meditation group with some beginners find helpful. If there is a Buddhist school nearby - try there. Good luck
You need to relax and think about things....
