as far as I know it never trumps other crimes anyway. The protagonist in this case is Albanian but even it he was British he'd still got to jail for murder regardless of his family. A rare sensible decision by the courts.

His wife has a restraining order out against him and he is barred from seeing his children without permission. I can't see his family leaving the UK to return to be closer to him.
