And why?

While we're at it 'reaching out' is the new 'asking', again, why?

I blame the CIA of course, dumbwashing the world. :-)

In the song 'Convoy' 'negatory' was used by truckers' comms, and probably the long word was used to avoid a monosyllabic 'no', which might be missed. They could have used 'negative' but the americans seem to love extra syllables.
If the OED has now been reduced to including the likes of negatory
Then we are truly lost
Yes corbyloon, you are correct , but my trip to Charleston was the first time I was in America, I couldn’t go earlier as I was too young to run away to sea. I was about 16 at the time , it was a real culture shock. I will always remember the truly awful storms we sailed through on the way home.

Storms, aircooledfool? Weather bombs, shurely.

So, like, please don’t depress me even more , innit
"A 'weather bomb' is an unofficial term for a low pressure system whose central pressure falls 24 millibars in 24 hours in a process known as explosive cyclogenesis."

How many folk would know what, "explosive cyclogenesis" means?
Most would understand “extreme low pressure system that occurs very quickly” especially if they had the misfortune to be sailing through on in the North Atlantic, in a type 14 frigate, with an open weather deck . If you lived in the after mess you had to walk over the open deck to the galley, collect plated meals, and struggle back holding your plates. Getting down the ladder was the hardest. Unbelievable now , but that’s the way it was back then
"reaching out" - I blame Neil Diamond.
Misunderestimted, strategery, I blame dubbya!
Should have been misunderestimated of course, I think I’m getting what dubbya had
A really old one here, which seems to be on the retreat (hopefully).

When did now become at this moment in time

Anyone with access to Google, like you, TCL.

After they'd discounted Phil Collins on a rocket bike anyway.
Canary... excellent example of using many letters and syllables to enable the speaker to gain time to think and to keep his/her turn with the talking stick. 'So' is a simpler modern version.
The phrase that annoys me the most is "my truth".

This seems to cover everything from a version of the truth and all the way up to downright lies.
Desk; 'My truth' is a brainless assertion that solipsism is the way forward.
Complete agree re 'reach out' and 'journey'.
I discovered recently that instead of companies saying that they are no longer supporting a particular software version, they say they are "sun-downing" it. Like that's going to make the user feel better about it
Of course the simple greeting "Hello" has become "Hi there, how are you doing? All right?". Note how the greeter answers the initial question for you, to indicate that they are not wanting a run down of your current state of health or mind.
On the football terraces... When did 'The Referee's a Barsteward' become 'The Referee's a Love Child'?
Year on year - no it isn't, it is year after year.
