Not Working Full Notice At Work.

I’m so happy i’ve found a new job . I’ve worked in my current workplace 20years . 10 years under one original management and 10 years under the current management who are not very nice to work for at all.
We’ve had a lot of people leave on the spot so I didn’t know what notice people usually give. I’ve given 1 months notice yesterday and I think that is ample time to show someone else the ropes on the jobs that I do . I’ve told new place one month .but on checking as I’ve been there over 6 years I’m supposed to give 6 weeks notice. :/ and my boss has mentioned it. She said about having to pay if I leave before the 6 weeks .
She said she is checking with their employment lawyer and she’s going to let me know . I’ve tried checking online but I’m finding conflicting advice . A friend has advised just sticking to my 4 wk date and if I end up working a few days and I don’t get paid for them so be it .my boss may surprise and come back and say 4wks is fine but knowing how things usually are she may insist on the 6 weeks. Any advice gratefully received .

This minimum is unaffected by longer service. However, contractual notice is the amount of notice that the employer can set out in the terms and conditions of employment which can be longer than the statutory notice.

My boss was going down the path of insisting I work the full 6 weeks but after leaving me hanging all day she finally said that she’ll accept my 4 weeks notice . I think she prob took advice and found that she couldn’t force me to give work more than the 4 weeks that I wanted to do . I ended up with a splitting headache from trying to work out what to do all day .
^I disagree peter- jenarry has shown you can successfully negotiate a smaller notice period. You can also seek to use outstanding holidays as aprt of teh notice period. Some employers would prefer you to leave early particularly if you have access to confidential data/client data or could be an unsettling ditraction to others. And if you did fail to turn up for the last couple of weeks what would the employer do in reality- almost certainly nothing apart from making sure you weren't paid for days not worked.
