Buying A Bed

I now need to buy a new bed, just a normal double bed with drawers underneath.

I found one at Ikea, it says that it is a 'high' bed. Has anyone bought one of these and would the extra height be a problem for me at 5' 4" ?

Beds are more expensive than I thought. I thought that it was just Ikea that was expensive but the prices have gone up quite a bit since I bought my last bed in 1989.

My dear departed mother had bed problems in her later years.

If the bed was to close to the floor she struggled to stand up.

If the bed was to high when she sat up on the edge her feet wouldn't touch the floor.

Both of the above caused problems for her.

My advice would be test the bed for arising and chambering into before purchasing.

PS: you may need to check wether or not your cats approve,,

Clambering, I know what I typed, thanks auto correct;-)
The IKEA website gives detailed measurements. Measure your own bed height to compare, but looking at some of the beds IKEA describe as 'high' you may find it is very similar to the one you have.
By the way, if you current bed base is in good condition you may only need a new mattress.
And, unless you are handy, the bed will need assembling by someone. I believe IKEA can provide this.

All of the answers were very helpful.

Ozzy, I am between cats at the moment.

I have measured my own bed and the 'high' Ikea bed is the same height.
Having spent yesterday afternoon on a low sofa in the local tavern I can say that getting up from that was no joke. So the high bed will do.

My current bed base is 33 years old this year and is a wooden frame. I don't think that it would cope with dismantling and moving. The mattress is around 4/5 years old and due for renewal.

I have two options for getting the bed built - Ikea could build it when they deliver it or it could go onto the list that my brother will get handed to him when he comes to help.

Thanks - the bed is a major purchase.

Could you go into a bed shop and try a bed out Susan. You really need to be comfy, and you don’t want to fall out of a too high bed :-(.
When you get your bed splash out on some some luxury bedding ( you deserve it.
I’m sure your brother could ‘ do’ the work ?

anne - brother grumpy, list long already.
Well we have a Facebook page for assistance to residents of our wee town. Sometimes IKEA furniture assemble is offered ( at a competitive price) . Or to save your brother getting exhausted, just get IKEA to do it on jig time .
If you were closer, Wolf, I'd come and put the bed together for you. I love messing about with drills, screwdrivers and screws. Not too good at hammering though. I never get the nail straight.
Good luck with it all but, if you can, try out the bed before you buy it otherwise it's an expensive mistake.
Have you tried argos, they do standard drawer divans.
