Some rehabilitated and released, some kept. There were Charles, Anne and Elizabeth the coypus, a rook called Nick that spoke fluently, Maggie the magpie, Jack and Jill the jackdaws, Olivia the little owl and a hedgehog that grew enormous, could bite through a wellie boot and was released. We also had various amphibians in tanks and, memorably, a large group of snakes that were rescued from a sailor. They were horendous, hissing and writhing, they went to a zoo, thank goodness.
There was a stray ginger tom who just moved in (until dad saw him) when I was very small. I can remember dressing him in my dolly's nightie and fastening a bonnet on him before tucking him up in my pram and taking him for a walk on the lawn. Otherwise Dad was anti-pets although we had a very large garden and lived on The Green, which gave onto more wild land. Turned out his dad bred Airedale terriers and dad had to do all the donkey work when he was small.
Aged about 8/9, we did get a pony - black fell cross - called Gypsy who was on loan from the RSPCA. From that came pony-madness and one result is that my niece was named Groom of the Year by Horse and Hound a few years ago. See where a pet can take you!
As soon as I married, I got a labrador. :)

Though I finally got my wished for dog, I'm sure my mum wasn't happy. He was never allowed in the house..he had no freedom, being chained to his dog house on a long lead. At night,he lived in the basement. Also tied up. He was never house trained. It was my job to clean the soiled newspapers every morning.
So, when I had my own...it was freedom of the flat,my bed was hers...and the cats ;)
My soulmates...both gone 3 years.
