Looking to book a day trip during our 4 days in Riga. The only one that really interests me is the Hill of Crosses in Lithuania. Looking at a couple of different itineraries there's HOC and Rundale Palace or HOC and Šiauliai City (fourth largest city in Lithuania). I'd like to get the excursion booked soon.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be much appreciated.

We are staying in the old town of Riga and any pointers where to eat and drink and what to see would be much appreciated, also what to avoid. Many thanks peeps.

Bump.
I think experts on Riga restaurants might be a bit thin on the ground on AB Lady CG, & just to keep you company, all I know about Riga, is it's the name of my much-loved dog, but she's not even Latvian, she's Hungarian!

Have a nice trip :0)

Thanks for that, Khando. You've given me a chuckle anyway. Does said dog speak fluent Magyar?

Chris usually comes up with something useful even if there's no one to give first-hand experience. I'm leaning towards the HOC / Rundale trip anyway, as I love beautiful palaces.
Here's Riga, she's rescue dog from Budapest & she has me completely trained;

If you use google and type in ‘day trips from Riga’ it comes up with many many recommendations

Oh she's a darling ! :-)

I miss having a dog. Did you adopt her from a charity in Germany or did you find her in Hungary?
that dog is very pretty :) if you dont get any recommendations, perhaps you could wait till you're there and ask around?

For the stuff locally, yes, perhaps, but I want to get the HOC trip booked in advance. I'm just curious as to what would be a good itinerary. As I said, it's the only day trip from Riga that interests me, having googled and looked at a fair few.

I think the Rundale palace one is going to be a winner, but if there's anyone who knows that part of the world and can suggest something I've overlooked or don't know about, I would be very interested.

When we did our trip to Neuschwanstein a few years ago we combined it with Linderhof and Oberammergau. It was a very nice day out.
LadyCG; A local dog rescue centre owner here near Stuttgart, heard from a contact he had in Budapest that a dog shelter there was not looking after it's dogs well & was being closed down, he drove a lorry there & picked them all up.

She's actually a sheep dog, but doesn't know it !
From this Hungarian breed came our Border collies & the Australian sheep dogs, I'm told.

Oh wow, I'm so pleased your friend rescued them. She's an absolute sweetie. I love waggy tails! ❤️

I think I have found the perfect trip incorporating stops at Jelgava, Bauska, Rundale Palace and Hill of Crosses. It's a tad pricey but reviews says it's worth it.

Happy to receive any further Riga-related suggestions or tips.

Thank you once again.
you probably know about this already but Riga's art nouveau heaven (though you can only view most of them from outside)

Thank you, Jno. Yes it's one of the things that first captured my eye about the place.
