Avast "Free" Antivirus

My "Free" Avast has expired and they ask me to renew. However, when i try to renew the "Free" version they give me no option but to upgrade to a pay monthly scheme. I find it difficult to get this off my screen and instead of Avast giving me protection it seems that Avast is a plague on my computer and acting like a virus itself. How can i get rid of this nuisance?

Are you sure its genuine? I have had a couple of reminders recently from different companies that I am not even signed up to!

If you refuse the pay option you'll end up being offered to continue the free one; that happened to me yesterday.

Its genuine, I have had Avast Free for years, it is only now they try to get me to upgrade.
