Hi All I've seen a private number plate I'd like to buy from the DVLA website. I've not done this before and was a bit confused about the timing of everything ie: getting the reg transferred to my car, then having to tell my insurance Company and have the plates made up. Is it an easy process or am I worrying unneccessarily ?

if u get the plate from the DVLA the transfer fee is included in the price. I changed mine last month and it was easy. You need 2 take your insurance, log book and tax disc into the DVLA office or send it away. from buying the reg 2 putting it on my car i was 5 days.
4got 2 say. the DVLA is the cheepest. go 2 other plate sites and c if they have the reg ur after. they buy it from the DVLA then put extra charges on top most of the time.

Thanks Skunge - I've found that the DVLA are 80 - 100 cheaper than getting the same plate from elsewhere on the net. All the transfer fees and Vat are included too.
dont take your tax disc in,they ask you to post it to them when you get your new one.
hi there
dead simple!
purchase the plate from them,(transfer fee is included in the purchase price)
when the paperwork arrives -if near enough you can go to your local dvla office with the paperwork for the vehicle you wish to put it on (mot, tax disc, registration document) & your cherished number form V750,you will have to fill out form V317 normally only available at the reg/office,they will process it ,then normally send it back to you in a few days --i dont think they do it on the spot now, when you receive your documents you will have a form V943 -number plate authorisation certificate,so you can have your plates made up, you should get your tax disc included /to run to the end of original expiry date. you should then return the old tax disc.
within ten days you should get your new registration document back.
If you have a new style mot certificate! this will also be reprinted to the new reg details.
it sounds long winded but i have just transfered mine AGAIN.
dont forget to tell your insurance company when it is all done!
good luck
i went into the DVLA office inGlasgow Norm so i had 2 take my disc in otherwise they wouldnt have changed the reg over there n then.
me again. should have said normanthedog last time not norm. best if u can go into the office though they do everything 4 u. would like to know who reprinted grs600's mot though.
Hi skunge
the DVLA office re-printed my MOT cert with all the reg changes.
they used to put a rubber stamp on it which said
NOW REGISTERED AS -------------------
does that answer your query
i got mine back today-so ZIP IT.

Thanks for your answers. I've just rung the DVLA and bought the plate - so there's no turning back now :-) It doesn't seem as complicated as I first thought. All there is to do now is brave the queue in the DVLA Manchester office !
Purchasing a private number plate from the DVLA website is a relatively straightforward process, but there are several steps involved, including transferring the registration to your car, informing your insurance company, and having the plates made up. It's best to follow the instructions provided by the DVLA or UK government approved agency like newreg.co.uk site could do this for you but overall the process shouldn't cause undue worry.
