Number Of Council Waste Bins.
35 Answers
I have often wondered how many wheelie bins councils require to be used in different areas. In West Norfolk we leave out a green recycling bin and a black general waste bin with one left on alternate weeks, and a grey food waste caddy every week. I hear some areas have three or four bins?.

I don’t understand people who say they never have ANY food waste. Yes I try my best to avoid wastage but there are always some things which cannot be used.
We have a compost system at home that gets veg peelings etc. But the council food caddy gets the things that would not rot down easily in our heap- such as meat/fish bones, melon and pineapple skins.

We have one of the highest recycling rates in the country...because our council make it dead easy - ALL recycling goes into one green wheelie bin...glass, paper, cardboard, metal, textiles...even shredded paper (bagged). You can leave dead batteries and electrical items on top.
Food waste caddy every week - such a good idea.

Repeat with Location. Hayling Island (Havant Borough Council)
Two free, green for recyclable, black for non-recyclable. One chargeable, brown for garden waste.
All my food waste (which is food preparation waste like potato peelings, carrot tops, eggshells, etc.; I eat all my edible food) goes into my wormery to produce valuable fertiliser for my vegetable garden.

Our general waste bin here on the Norfolk Broads, is green! So confusing for visitors to a busy tourist area.
Grey bin for all recyclables, and batteries, textiles or electrical items can be left in a small bag beside the bin.
Food waste caddy is collected each week, but we compost all of ours and have yet to create any.

As examples of how things differ, in most of the country you either can't put glass bottles and jars out with your recycling or else you have to put them in a separate container. In Dover though, glass can go into the recycling wheelie bin, whereas paper and card has to go into a separate box:

Here in Mid-Suffolk, they keep changing the rules. At one time empty bleach bottles couldn't go into recycling bins but now they can. They also used to accept textiles, placed in a separate bag on top of a recycling bin, but now they don't.
