I don't believe a word these councils say when they go on about how they have no money. Nowhere is there more waste and incompetence than local authorities. No doubt if they make cuts it will be care homes or libraries but the diversity or climate change departments will have no problems where money it seems is no object.

I shake my fist in the direction of this news.

Both fists in fact.
well, if inflation is around 10%, a 5% rise seems reasonable to me (well completely unreasonable of course, but you know what i mean!)
// Both fists in fact. //

My sentiments exactly.

Apparently councils up and down the land have tens of billions £££ in reserve.

Proposed 15% in Croydon. Most councils are restricted to a maximum 5% increase
I'm sure I heard on Jeremy Vine that Central Beds are not making any increase
zebu: "Apparently councils up and down the land have tens of billions £££ in reserve" - on what do you base that assumption?
labour run councils are the biggest wasters, lot's of diversity targets
to meet, lot's of illegals to house and feed, + translators, lgbtq all this diversity for the fringe in society costs.
...and lots of sweeping statements in the above posts, too...
perhaps they're having to pay out a fortune in damages because someone planted knotweed a century ago

Woo hoo!!

So my bin collections are going to get 5% better :-)
How I wish the council here (N Wales) was increasing council tax by 5%. They have been discussing 10%, 15%, and even 20%. The last I heard they had decided on 12 1/2 %.
Our council is offering grants for people to put up flagpoles etc for the Coronation!
gingejbee/...and lots of sweeping statements in the above posts, too...and lots of sweeping statements in the above posts, too.../

Could you please clarify!! :-)

Maybe this will help..

Sweeping statements and how to avoid them

I doubt anyone can/will clarify their replies/remarks/comments.
If they do (to my satisfaction) I will eat my hat I don't have.

Labour run councils I'd guess are the same as all local councils regardless of political their stripe, including UKIP if any still exist (ever did exist?).. of course Conservative councils are perfect in every possible way. I have sat in on discussion groups where 'those who know' from personal experience confirm what we suspect, councils do waste money
//So my bin collections are going to get 5% better :-)//

No, but maybe your comrades on the bins get get a 5% pay rise?

5% given todays circumstances actually seems reasonable to me.
