It was during the summer holidays at school and I remember the story getting embelished everytime he told it to his friends when we went back to school. By the end of my very first week at school my brother was a legend who ran away for a full week and survived on the streets! I still like to remind him of it every now and again (normally when we're all drunk and in need of a good story!)
My youngest son who was about 3 or 4 yrs old was throwing a tantrum & declaring that he hated everything & was running away. As he stood at the door yelling "I'm leaving you know, I really am!", I glanced in his Co-Op carrier & saw he'd packed his slippers & his womble. I suggested he might like to wait until it stopped raining, by which time he'd thumped with his brother & got it out of his system.
I ran away when I was six because I'd dropped a slice of bread & butter on the floor (it was by accident right!!) and my Mum told me off 'cause she thought I'd done it on purpose. I took my doll (Penelope) and my Snoopy nightie and intended to walk to my Nainie's house and live there. I got halfway down the road & went back 'cause I'd forgotten my toothbrush - how rubbish! The worst of it was that my Mum hadn't even noticed I'd gone!!
I ran away when I was about 5 or 6 coz my mam had told me off about something. I took a little case (with nothing in) and sat behind the shed in the garden, digging the soil with a little stick.
About an hour later my mam found me and asked what I was doing. She could hardly stop herself laughing when I told her, especially when she asked what I had in my case. I then asked if I could come back home coz I didn't like it!
Years later my daughter screamed at me that she was leaving home coz she hated me and her mam. I asked her where she was going and she shouted back that she didn't know. I told her not to go too far coz tea would be ready in half an hour. You know what it's like when you're trying hard to cry and be angry when you're trying not to laugh?!!
