ftse 100 - outside influences

I've been intrested in the stock market for many years. And just began spread betting the ftse 100.
Are there any outside influences(other exchanges, etc) apart the usual buying and selling of stock in that exchange????

War or other political instability - esp in oil producing regions.

In short, anything in the world that might affect a company quoted in the UK - how about the prices in the internet gambling companies falling today? The external influence was legislation in the US.
