Those dismissed well paid politicians do not deserve a special reward for such short service. There are many people throughout the land who give many years of voluntary service to local or national charities yet never expect anything other than the goodwill and thanks of their colleagues.

If we are adhering to the tradition - and its suitability in a modern democracy is something for another debate - then Ms Truss is entitled to nominate a list if she so chooses.

The criteria is based on having served as PM, not how good a job was made of it, or how long the individual held the post, just being PM triggers the right to nominate, and on that basis, Ms Truss is entitled to nominate.
