Within the UK, you can obtain USA phone numbers on 118 505. This is BT's international directory enquiry service. The minimum charge is �1.50 which covers up to 1 minute. Thereafter, the charge is 2.5p per second.

Within the USA, you can get directory information on a WAP-enabled mobile phone from whitepages.com:

I'm not absolutely certain about whether there's a 'universal' directory enquiries phone number in the USA (which works across all states and all phone companies) but I've got an idea that 411 will do the job.

Two ways work here in the U.S. If the number you wish to know is in the same State, simply dial 555-1212 or, alternately, 1-411. If the number is in a different State, you'll need to know the aea code which is listed in the front of any phone directory. Hence, to seek a number in, say, Montana, it would be 406-555-1212... This will work, of course, on cellular phones as well...
