Can somebody put me out of my misery please? I breezed through most of this puzzle - but am still struggling to fill 2 blank squares - the solutions I have left are ?ATO and ?OWT - and these must be the solutions to "British sculptor of steel's mode of transport" and"Large knife about to challenge" I have kept going back to the puzzle - but have now given up - especially as the fault may be that I have entered other solutions in the wrong place - but they all went in so easily!! If these are wrong I will not start over - but will just be happy to draw a line under it! Thanks in advance!

Not sure if this helps with the first one. Maybe some instruction in the preamble ? But I can't find 'Car O' as a mode of transport. This is assuming that an entry has been incorrectly entered. See what you think.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Caro
All I can think of is Nato and Nowt
The Nowt answer is for Returning fashion is of no consequence to some. Not = Ton, fashion ( returning), and the preamble has 'one letter omitted from wordplay in some answers) (paraphrased).
Yes, NO[w]T - 'ton' = fashion (reversed) and 'w' is unclued.
British sculptor is (Anthony) CARO
... and Nowt, nothing, of no consequence to some (dialect word)
...he worked in steel.
And DA(H) [Also DHA] missing the last letter + RE [about] would make DARE [Challenge]
Sorry guys, I didn't refresh ;-(
'Da' is an alt. spelling of the knife (there isn't a missing letter in this clue).

Thank you so much for Caro - I'd actually got ?ARO but somehow read it as a "T" - - and yes I didn't mention the possible missing letter part! But at least I now know they're all in the right place! and that means the large knife clue must be cowt or dowt as the clues are in alphabetical order - but I've looked up both of those and can't find anything! Thanks again!
Patgreg, check the replies - that'll sort your Nowt and the Dare,knife...
Thanks Prof M. Didn't think yourself and NAC was about. So tried to help out without the preamble info.

I see now how my suggestion works 'Car O' works . 'O' omitted in clue.

Didn't check Chambers on Da. Only went to my online source. Don't shout at me ;-)
(klazo, is the book getting too heavy already?)
No mate. It's hard to flick the pages with one hand when there's a beer in the other ;-)

I'm so slow typing I didn't see all the other replies while I was responding to klazomaniac - Thanks everyone - I was getting cross eyed staring at the puzzle - and resorted to putting all the remaining clues on a piece of paper - I had already entered "dare" in the right place but not ticked it off - and thought ?OWT was the knife clue - either over tired or senior moment - but thanks to all of you I can now let it go in the recycling tonight! Thanks everyone!
(much easier with a whisky in the other}.
Glad you're sorted patgreg :-)

Prof M ;-) lol
